While some congenital vascular abnormalities are involved (some estimate ~ 2% of us have an aneurysm (outpouching from a blood vessel). Number Five: Cerebrovascular Diseases, mostly Strokes, with 162,890 deaths. Best prevention: Don’t smoke and avoid being near it. Tobacco is an underlying cause for nearly all COPD and emphysema. Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Emphysema, and Chronic Bronchitis make up this group. Colds and coughs impact the upper respiratory tract, not getting down into the lungs. Number Six: Chronic Lower Respiratory Tract Diseases, 142,342 deaths. Factors that elevate dementia risk include smoking, high blood pressure, circulatory compromise, high blood fats fatty diets, high salt intake and lack of regular, aerobic exercise. Number Seven: Alzheimer’s Disease at 119,399 deaths. They may require dialysis, unless a transplant kidney is available. About a third of diabetics requiring insulin as children will develop kidney failure, and a lower percentage of those developing Type II diabetes. While reasonable control of blood sugar can be done with insulin pumps, about 5% of diabetics develop blindness. Another anti-cancer vaccine, very effective at preventing cervical cancer, works against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). A very effective method of preventing this disease is Hepatitis B vaccination. Toxic chemical exposures are a particular risk for industrial employees. Chronic Hepatitis B cases play a prominent role, as does alcohol abuse. Number Nine: Chronic Liver Diseases, including Cirrhosis, with 56,585. And registering to be an organ donor can definitely save lives. Early detection, diet and medications, can lessen the threat. Being a hemodialysis technician, before medical school, gave me a healthy respect for diabetes and other renal disease causes. Number 10: Kidney (Renal) Disease, including Nephritis or Nephrotic syndrome, (~54,358 deaths/year). Here’s how each could be addressed – in reverse order. The top 10 causes account for about 75% of America’s annual deaths. Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 54,358.Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis : 56,585.Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 142,342.Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 162,890.Accidents (unintentional injuries): 224,935.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cdc.gov, noted the top 10 leading causes of death included: I’ve always thought, knowledge was key to helping realize threats and mitigating them – helping people lead more productive – and hopefully longer, meaningful lives. Healing others and forestalling death has been an interest throughout my medical career.
